In a surprising twist, Matter Labs, the brains behind Ethereum’s layer-2 scaling solution zkSync, has dropped its bid to trademark the term “ZK” (zero knowledge).

This move comes after a wave of backlash from top ZK researchers who insisted that ZK technologies should stay a public good, free for everyone to use. Matter Labs made the announcement in a post on X.

Solana Takes the Lead in Token Craze

In May, the Solana blockchain saw an explosion of activity with creators launching a staggering 455,000 tokens. Lower barriers to entry and the hunt for the next big memecoin are driving this surge. Solana’s numbers leave other blockchains in the dust: Ethereum Layer 2 Base only saw 177,000 tokens, while BNB Chain had 39,000. Meanwhile, Ethereum mainnet and Layer 2 networks Arbitrum and Optimism each saw fewer than 20,000 new tokens.

BNB Blasts to New All-Time High

BNB, the native token of the BNB Chain ecosystem, just hit a new all-time high at $709 this Wednesday! This marks a significant milestone as the fourth-largest cryptocurrency by market cap surged over 11% in the past 24 hours, smashing its previous peak of $690 set back in May 2021.

Vitalik Buterin Slams Celebrity Memecoins

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin isn’t holding back on his criticism of recent celebrity memecoin releases. In a June 5 post on X, Buterin stressed that people should be prepared for their tokens to lose value and that financial activities should only be justified if they bring societal benefits. He highlighted areas like improving healthcare, supporting open-source software, and boosting art and creativity as examples of worthwhile endeavors.

Roaring Kitty Memecoins Skyrocket

Roaring Kitty-themed memecoins are on fire after a massive surge in GameStop’s stock. According to CoinGecko, GME, KITTY, and ROAR memecoins saw jaw-dropping increases of 160%, 330%, and 150%, respectively. On Friday, these coins hit their peaks, trading at $0.03088 for GME, $0.0377 for KITTY, and $0.001584 for ROAR.
